Paddles

Choosing the right paddle can be confusing as there is a wide range available. If you intend to specialise in one particular aspect of canoeing/kayaking please ask our staff, they will show you the paddles specially designed for that purpose. Otherwise a general purpose conventional paddle will be suitable for most paddling activities. Paddle shapes and designs have undergone some radical changes. The flattish conventional paddle blade, which has been around for years, is still the most popular for recreational paddlers, general white water paddlers and sea kayakers. This blade is also the best shape to learn all the basic strokes.
The racing disciplines however, prefer the propeller/wing shaped paddle. These blades have a distinct curved wing appearance with a lip running the length of the front blade. See our Propeller/Wing Paddle Section photo's at the bottom of the page. We also sell Grey Owl Canoe and Outrigger paddles. Please give us a call if you are confused.

Mid Wing (Epic) |
Product No: 237

|

The Epic Mid Wing paddle is an effective all-around medium-sized wing blade designed for optimum performance in ICF marathon distance surf ski racing and fitness paddling. It's an ideal sprint paddle for women and junior competitors. The Epic MId Wing is also well suited for high performance touring that utilizes powerful strokes. The burgundy shaft is our lightest weight shaft and has a medium flex. This shaft is often preferred for long distance racing & paddling. For those who require a stiffer and/or stronger shaft, we recommend our blue shaft option.
Shaft Stiffness.
Epic shafts are matched to the intended use of your paddle. Epic paddles feature a true oval shaft. Epic shafts are built in an oval shape, rather than post formed from a stock round shaft which compromises the strength.
Green Hybrid - our most durable shaft utilizes a combination of fiberglass and carbon fiber and is standard on all Hybrid, Signature Hybrid and Reinforced Carbon paddles.
Burgundy Carbon - our lightest shaft has medium flex and is standard on all Full and Ultra Carbon touring paddles. The medium flex makes this shaft not as durable.
Blue Carbon - our stiffest shaft is used for Full Carbon wing paddles.

Voyageur (Grey Owl Paddles) |
Product No: 390
|
|

The Voyageur Paddle is made of laminated ash and bass shaft with a cherry pear grip; cherry butternut and bass blade. An excellent all-round paddle.
Why Wood? Wood is nature’s own composite. As a naturally forming polymer, wood is comprised of long-chain, cross-linking cellulose molecules, bound together with lignum. This miraculous combination gives wood its unique properties of strength, stiffness, resilience, buoyancy, and durability. Because no two pieces are exactly alike, wood provides a broader range of individual ‘feel.’ A single model will vary in flex pattern, stiffness and action. This offers the consumer a wide range of choices when selecting a paddle.

Sugar Island (Grey Owl Paddle) |
Product No: 391
|
|

The Sugar Island Paddle is a laminated cherry and bass shaft with walnut and cherry scroll grip; cherry, ash, bass and walnut blade, extended urethane edging around tip. Large blade offers good directional control and acceleration. Good for moving water and those who prefer a large blade with little slippage.
Why Wood? Of course, the beauty and feel of wood are unmatched. Ask any seasoned canoeist or kayaker why they love their wooden paddle and they will say, ‘It’s the feel.’ This affinity with wood is a love affair that prompts canoeists with day jobs to hang their wooden paddles on the wall of the office. When you take your wooden paddle on the water, you’re returning it to its natural habitat.

The Hammerhead is the same layup as the Sugar Island with oiled mushroom T-grip. Partial urethane edging; 10-ounce fibreglass cloth covering blade. Tough and lightweight for use in moving water and class 1 - 3 whitewater conditions. Effective wide short blade.
Why Wood? What makes a great paddle is a combination of many things. A grip that fills the palm just so; a shaft that is smooth, oval, and doesn’t twist in the hand; a blade that knifes into the water without a ‘plop’; a lively action that pulls without a flutter or vibration; a balanced fulcrum that doesn’t feel like a shovel full of wet snow on the return phase of the stroke. Wood that looks beautiful and is lightweight in design, with a finish that gleams in the sunlight. And finally, an affordable product that has the durability to withstand the rigors of the sport.
