The Platypus is a flat water river touring kayak but it is also perfect for paddling harbours, estuaries and calm lakes. It is great boat for developing fitness, social paddling, birdwatching and even for going on an overnight trip. (Many kayak paddlers use it in the Avon Descent) It's relatively fast, stable and turns well.
This is one of our most popular general touring kayaks.
The cockpit is positioned at the widest part of the Platypus for maximum stability and tapers down to a needle shaped nose that cuts through the water. The long sleek hull lends itself to speedy acceleration and excellent tracking, making the Platypus ideal for covering longer distances
A sealed rear bulkhead and hatch allows easy access to a large storage area behind the seat. Grab loops on bow and stern provide for carrying and rescuing. It is available with or without a lift -up rudder.
When I started paddling in 1973 I travelled around Australia and took a kayak similar to the Platypus, but in those days they were made of fibreglass and not as strong. I did however paddle it in the ocean, on rivers and even on big rapids like on the river Tully and the Baron River in Cairns. So if you want an all-round kayak for day use or for a weekend trip the Platypus would probably suit you.
